The used car market in the UK continues to defy expectations. During the worst months of the 18-month long recession, the secondhand market managed to stay afloat and even turned a small profit. By comparison, the new car market needed a life preserver in the form of a huge government scrappage scheme to stay alive. The scheme was originally designed to encourage new car sales by giving each buyer a two thousand-pound discount if they traded in an old clunker for a new vehicle. The program was an unmitigated success and resulted in eight consecutive quarters of growth. Unfortunately for the new car market, the scheme ended in April, 2010. While the new car market was reversing its downward trend with the help of the government, the used car market was tending to its own business. Sales remained stable during 2008 and even increased by an impressive 6 percent in 2009. Sales were so good that many dealers even raised prices on quality used cars. What does the future hold? Let's just say that used car dealers have many reasons to smile. Their only real competition — the new car market — no longer has access to government aid. Many people expected a dramatic fall in sales as a result of the discontinuation of the Car Scrappage Scheme earlier this year. It had originally been set up to boost the car industry in these dire economic times, and those people who were scrapping a car at least 10 years old received a £2000 cash bonus – partly funded by the government and partly funded by the car industry. However this scheme, while very successful, ended at the end of March 2010, and experts predicted that sales would be down by a large percentage over the previous year. However, according to the new results just published for the month of June for all cars including Renault Laguna car sales, sales are up by 11% over the previous year, a surprising result indeed. However, the breakdown shows that this incredible growth is mainly down to the business sector as this increased 25% over the same period last year.
